Places

  • There are currently no places for Introduction to Music classes, but it's worth getting your name on the waiting list as there are usually quite a few changes over the summer.
  • For other beginners, and those who have had lessons before please do contact us to see what we can offer. contact us now!
  • For information on the minimum ages to start classes, have a look at the Progressions Chart below, or the Classes pages.
  • New classes are starting in recorder, violin, cello and percussion
  • The Junior Woodwind and Junior Brass Ensembles have taken off but still have space for some more elementary players. An oboe or two would be very good!
  • We also welcome pupils who have their instrumental lessons elsewhere but would like to join one of our ensembles or the orchestra.
  • The situation changes day to day, and we are often able to start new classes very quickly if there is enough interest. To enquire about vacancies, contact us now!

Assisted Places

QYMC runs an assisted place scheme and we welcome applications from those who think they may be eligible. The assisted place scheme has recently been updated and consequently there are some details we would like to bring to your attention. (The assisted place policy can be downloaded here or a hard copy can be requested from the desk at QYMC.

Assisted places last for one academic year from when they are agreed in September. Please note that applications for all assisted places, including renewals, must be handed in to the desk by the previous summer half-term break. The forms are also available from the desk.

The Scheme is dependent on funds available. If you would like to donate to this fund, please contact us.

Instruments Available

We do have a few instruments available for hire to pupils who would like to learn at QYMC. The hire fee is around £25 per term, which is cheaper than most hire schemes. Where we do not have instruments to hire we can advise on the hire schemes operated by local shops. We do not hire guitars.

Instruments available currently:

  • One trumpet
  • A few flutes
  • Various sizes of cello (but not very small ones)
  • Various sizes of violin

Instruments Needed

Many parents prefer to hire instruments to start with and there are some instruments which we either do not have or have run out of. Do you have instruments in the attic or the cupboard under the stairs which could go to a good home? We try to keep fees and charges down in order to make learning an instrument accessible to as many children as possible so we do not have a large budget for purchasing instruments. These are some instruments we need most urgently:

  • saxophones
  • clarinets
  • small cellos
  • small violins

Buying sheet music

Parents are always asking where to purchase sheet music. Gardonyi's (opposite St Mary's Church in South Ealing) is our nearest music shop. Their focus is guitars and drums, but they stock an increasingly wide range of violin strings, recorders and sheet music. There's Michael White's in North Ealing if you are a brass or woodwind player, and ABC Music in Kew. If you work in central London I can recommend Chappells (good mail order and telephone service) and Foyles.

I can recommend Musicroom, an online music shop from whom I have enjoyed very efficient service with the added bonus of free postage if you spend over a certain amount (why not get together with the other members of the class and buy all your music together?). For those of you looking for something a little different, try the Tutti online music shop which specializes in contemporary and rare CDs and sheet music, and an extraordinarily comprehensive collection of music with more popular appeal such as arrangements of Beatles numbers!

    Wanted

    • Do you play an instrument? The woodwind ensemble has space for a few extra players of grade 3 and above, and the orchestra, which is sounding fabulous at the moment, is open to those who don't have their instrumental lessons at QYMC as well as our pupils - different minimum grades apply to different instruments - contact us for details. All instruments are welcome but we'd particularly appreciate bassoon and French horn players and possibly one more cellist of grade 5 or above. The Recorder Ensemble has a few spaces - if you're interested in joining you should be between grade 2 and grade 5. For more details look at the ensembles page, and get in touch if you fancy giving an ensemble a try. Ensembles
    •

    • The Junior String Ensemble is for players of pre-grade 1 to grade 2/3. The String Ensemble is for pupils of grades 3/4 upwards. There are also chamber groups for string players of grade 4 - 8. Any other instrumentalists who would like to play some chamber music (duets, trios, quartets etc.) should let us know and we'll see if we can get some more groups started.
